We launched Studio Visit in 2008 because of the large and continually growing demand from artists for effective and high-quality vehicles in which to present their work to a wide audience. The Internet now offers many opportunities, but printed matter is still unmatched in its ability to attract and hold one’s attention. Our flag- ship publication, New American Paintings, has proven this to be the case time and time again, as many featured artists have gone on to receive substantial critical and commercial success due to their participation in the magazine.
When we released the first edition of New American Paintings in 1994, fewer than 180 artists applied for inclusion. Now, we review the work of more than 6,000 artists for our competi- tions every year. While the number of applicants has grown, there is only space for a limited number of artists. Studio Visit allows us to help a much larger and more diverse group of artists market themselves and their work. I am pleased to report that many artists included in Studio Visit have noted that it has led to significant opportunities.
More than 1,000 artists submitted work for this edition of Studio Visit. entries came from around the globe and in a variety of media. Our juror, Beth Venn, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Senior Curator of the department of American Art at The Newark Museum, spent an intense few days selecting the featured artists. In the end, there were enough artists worthy of inclusion to warrant the simultaneous publica- tion of two volumes, numbered 13 and 14.
Some of the artists featured in Studio Visit are self-taught, while others hold graduate degrees. Some have shown extensively, while others are at the beginning of their careers. However, all of the artists featured in Studio Visit are serious about and committed to their work. So, we hope that you take the opportunity to contact any artist that you feel may be appropriate for your gallery or collection. For your convenience, every artist has contact information provided.
We hope that you enjoy the new publication.
